Florida's damage prevention law puts the first step of every dig on the person digging: notify Sunshine 811 and wait for the marks.

Key rules (F.S. 556.105)

  • Give notice at least 2 full business days before digging; 10 full business days for work beneath state waters.
  • Utilities mark their lines within 2 full business days, to within 24 inches of either side.
  • The ticket information is good for 30 calendar days.

Making the request

Call 811 or (800) 432-4770, or submit a single-address ticket online. If the dig covers only a small part of the yard, Sunshine 811 suggests outlining it in white paint or flags so locators know where to look.

Homeowners

An owner digging on their own single-family property is exempt only to 10 inches deep, with due care and off utility easements (F.S. 556.108). Pools, trenches and stump removal all go deeper.
