Citrus, highways and growth
Ocoee grew on the north side of Starke Lake, named for founder Dr. J.D. Starke, and early residents worked fields near Lake Apopka. Captain Bluford Sims pioneered citrus budding here. State Road 50, Florida's Turnpike, the 408 extension and State Road 429 brought the growth that nearly doubled the population between 2000 and 2020. In 2018 the city formally acknowledged the 1920 Ocoee massacre, in which a white mob attacked the town's Black community.
