A residential pool dig usually takes 4 to 8 hours, per Angi. The planning around it, from permits to the barrier to the spoil pile, takes longer.

Dig prices
| Item | Angi, 2026 |
|---|---|
| National average | $2,500 |
| Most digs | $500 to $3,020 |
| Sand | $8 to $40 per cubic yard |
| Dirt | $8 to $25 per cubic yard |
| Labor share | about 80 percent |
A 14 by 28 foot pool is about 87 cubic yards in Angi's table. Hauling it away at Angi's Orlando rates of $10 to $30 per cubic yard would add roughly $870 to $2,610, by our arithmetic, unless the dirt stays on site.
Florida's pool safety law
A new home pool needs at least one safety feature to pass final inspection (F.S. 515.27): a barrier enclosure meeting 515.29, an approved safety cover, 85-decibel exit alarms, self-closing and self-latching doors with the release at least 54 inches up, or an ASTM F2208 pool alarm.
A 515.29 barrier is at least 4 feet high on the outside, has no gaps or footholds a small child could use, and has gates that open outward away from the pool and close and latch on their own.
Before the dig
- Pull the pool permit from the city or county for your address.
- Request Sunshine 811 marks.
- Decide where the spoil goes.
