From citrus town to suburb
The Orange Belt Railroad, citrus, turpentine and lumber drove Winter Garden's growth from the late 1800s. Freezes in 1894 and 1895 hurt the citrus industry, and back-to-back freezes in the 1980s ended citrus production in the county. Plant Street grew into the downtown, and the West Orange Trail runs through it.
